There’s no question that the scenery on Vancouver Island is “out of this world.” That’s the first thing I thought of when I read the theme of this week’s photo challenge from The Daily Post.

But the challenge is also asking us to find a photo that takes a familiar scene and makes it look and feel like something out of this world.

This week, as usual, my husband and I went to our favourite spots on Dallas Road in Victoria, BC, with cameras in hand. Usually I focus on photographing the sky, the beach, and the way sunlight plays on the ocean.

But this time, as we stood on the very edge of Clover Point, the sky suddenly filled with seagulls who found out someone was offering French fries to any birds who wanted them. This is the first photo I got of the seagull stampede.

And then… yikes! They swooped right over our heads and landed beside us in a disorderly cafeteria line.

It was an “out of this world” sight that is very much a part of this world. And as I clicked the camera shutter repeatedly, I hoped to capture a moment of beauty in the sudden flurry of activity.

This is my favourite photo from that afternoon.

    1. Thanks, Sandra! I’m so happy to have discovered your blog. I especially enjoyed your post about the snow in Cornwall. Snow is very unusual here on Vancouver Island too, so I can relate. 🙂

      1. Thank you! I’m happy that you found my blog too because it led me to yours! I’ve never been to Canada but have always hankered to visit. There’s still time, so who knows. Meanwhile, I can enjoy the west coast through your posts 🙂

    1. Thank you! That means a lot. I let them fly over my head and kept clicking the camera shutter and hoping I got a good composition (and hoped they wouldn’t land on my head in the process). 🙂
