Before I moved to the West Coast, the only thing I knew about magnolias was that they were in the title of a very emotional movie called Steel Magnolias.
Then one day I discovered them outside our local library and rushed to take a photo.
The result was kind of ho-hum, so I experimented with the editing tools on my iMac and came up with this variation of the same photo.
Inspired by their shapes and colours, I then took a calligraphy pen and sketched them.
And finally, I used acrylics to paint them on a little ceramic fridge magnet.
But it’s hard to beat the real thing.
In my opinion, the best way to appreciate magnolias is to walk right up to the tree, stand under it, and look up at the blossoms.

I have a magnolia that looks a lot like the one in your photos. Great photos, btw, and the fridge magnet is cute. Another reason to get close to one when it’s blooming (in April) is because the flowers smell like roses.

Thanks, Audrey! I’ll have to remember that – I don’t think I got close enough to smell them last time. Such beautiful blossoms. When we moved here from Saskatchewan, we called them “tulip trees.”
